The solution lies in specialist origami paper—thin, crisp, and slightly fibrous, such as kami or tant. Yet even with good paper, a common oversight is folding over existing creases in the opposite direction without reinforcing them. Paper has a grain, and folding against it repeatedly causes tearing. Learning to soften a crease by gently curling the paper before a reverse fold can save a model from a ragged, ugly split.

In the enthusiasm of a club setting, there is a strong temptation to “eyeball” a fold, especially when diagrams show a dotted line roughly halfway. This casual approach accumulates error at an alarming rate. A single degree of misalignment, multiplied over twenty folds, creates a final model that is not just slightly off but unrecognizable. The fix is mechanical: always fold edge-to-edge or point-to-point, using the existing crease as a guide. When diagrams call for a fold “slightly above” or “about a third,” take the time to measure with a ruler or, better yet, fold reference creases first. Many advanced folders crease entire grids just to find one fifth point—an act of preparation that feels excessive but saves a dozen failed attempts.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking pattern is the beginner who unfolds a model back to the start upon noticing a tiny error, determined to “do it right.” This act usually destroys the paper’s integrity, making future creases mushy and imprecise. Often, a slightly asymmetrical ear or an off-center beak gives the model character. More importantly, finishing a flawed model teaches the full sequence of folds, reinforcing the overall structure.
